HISTORY

"The reason I liked the Marquee the most was because it was scruffy and it had no air-conditioning whatsoever and it was a hellhole and your feet stuck to the carpet and that's exactly what a rock'n'roll club should be like."

Lemmy – Motörhead

"I'm proud to say we were one of the best bands to be banned from playing there."

Glen Matlock – Sex Pistols

Over half a century since the Marquee began but more relevant and needed in today’s music industry, ‘MARQUEE LIVE’ will provide a platform for the UK’s best new live music.

The Marquee Club has been defined as "the most important venue in the history of music". First opened in April 1958 by Harold & Barbara Pendleton, the Marquee was unprecedented in helping the careers of major artists and an important gathering place for the music industry, showcasing new trends such as Rhythm & Blues, Rock, Psychedelia, Progressive Rock, Punk, Heavy Metal and New Wave.

If not for the Marquee Club, many of the legendary rock and pop artists that we know today would never have got a break.

“Where is the pop corner of the world? For thousands of youngsters it is London's Marquee Club. It is the melting pot of today's hip music, where jazz, folk, and pop meet on equal terms. Where trends are born and stars emerge… The Marquee is a home for good music.”

Melody Maker
